Staining comes in a variety of forms, each allowing different end results to be achieved. Often times a combination of processes are used on a single project in order to achieve desired results. Acid staining (reactive stain) is a chemical reaction on a cement based material with acid and metallic salts, resulting in the permanent coloring of the cementitious surface. Acid Staining gives concrete a mottled or variegated look. Acids create beautiful colors on concrete, in earth-tone browns, reddish browns, greens, oranges, copper patina blue and near black for vivid colors with the same translucency dyes are sometimes used. Water based stains come in many colors and often can be color matched like interior paints, they have a tendency to be more opaque and offer looks not easily achieved with other types of stain. Stains can be applied to sidewalks, driveways, or other exterior surfaces and interior areas such as living rooms, bathrooms, or kitchens, enhancing any cement based surface, including decorative concrete overlays.
